Le cœur de l’ écosystème d’affûtage Sparx
Family of 5.
I play hockey and coach my daughters U12 and U7 ringette teams.
My son is a U9 goalie.
Combined we have about 10 ice times a week at least.
I did an original 4 cycles my first sharpen then a single cycle every 3 ice times.
That way my blades are always sharp and help me demo’s for the kids.
Saves us time and easy to use and also lets us use our skating tiles at home as skates have to be sharpened after every time after using those tiles.
Took me couple hours for initial setup and profiles for everyone’s skates, 5 pairs (YouTube beam and barcode setup). But now it’s just 3 minutes a sharpen and I don’t have to leave the house.
Only complaint is I wish they let you pick your own grinding wheels in the bundle package, as I’d like a 9/16 for my son. (Goalie)
I’m a happy owner for over 1 year. The machine is super easy to set up and there is ample tutorial content available. The edges are always sharpened accurately and perform without issue. I like that only the amount of steel needed is taken off evenly, as opposed to some skate shop jobs the round the toes or heels off too much.
Not only does this save me an hour a week (driving to the store to get skates sharpened, waiting, driving home) the BEST part is his skates are always as my son likes them. No more nasty surprises on the ice because of bad sharpens. The other day my 11 year old son said to me "Dad, I turn better now because I know my edges will always hold." I wish I had purchased this years ago, but better late than never!
Bought this after humming and hawing for a few months. Got the Sparx 3 and so far I have no complaints. I honestly wish there was a paper manual in the box however I made due with the online information.
I've done 10 sharpenings and so far the machine came perfectly aligned from jump. The beam edge checker is simple and the app has been flawless for me.
Now that I have this thing I went from 3/8 to 1/2 roh and may go 5/8 since I can touch up the edges anytime I want. Was a little under 2g with all the accessories I got but the time saved just in travel to my preferred shop at 1 hour round trip plus the 1-2 hour wait time I think it was worth it. If you are on the fence about getting one I'd say just do it.
A well designed and well build machine!!! I've sharpened my own skates and many other people's skates and it gives consistent sharpens every time.
Moderate mechanical skills required to set up, operate and maintain, but that's expected with a high precision metal working machine. With that being said, it's way easier to setup, operate and maintain that a regular manual skate sharpener. Instructional videos can help you work through most, if not all setup and adjustment issues you may encounter.
After ordering directly from the Sparx website, I received fast secure shipping to my door. After spending 15-20 minutes reading the instructions and 10 minutes watching setup instruction videos, I was able to setup the machine in my first attempt. After confirming the initial ring alignment (i.e. centred on the skate blade), the rings have stayed on centre, providing level edges on all the skate blades I've sharpened so far. I can confirm it's on centre, based on measurements I take on the blade using the high precision Sparx Edge Checker. (It's great piece of mind having the ability to check and adjust the ring alignment using a highly precise gauge with a magnifying eye piece and a tool.)
The ability to quickly and easily adjust where the ring makes contact with the toe of the skate blade is invaluable when sharpening many different skates.
The best part of this machine, is the ability to set the number of cycles. If I need to sharpen skates with regular use (4-6 hours)…
